Workshop program

The INTEDU research group (University of Bologna, University of Modena and Reggio Emilia, Sapienza University of Rome), in collaboration with AISSEC, is organizing the second edition of the workshop on “Inequality and Education: Measurement, Evidence, and Policy”.

Education, often regarded as a fundamental tool for upward mobility, plays a key role in shaping individuals' labor market prospects and broader economic trajectories. Understanding its drivers and consequences is essential for developing policies that promote social cohesion and sustainable economic growth. This workshop aims to bring together scholars and young researchers to explore the mechanisms driving inequality and educational disparities, the effectiveness of policies addressing these issues, and the broader economic and social implications. The workshop will provide a platform for fruitful discussions and networking opportunities, fostering interdisciplinary exchange and innovative approaches to tackling inequality and educational challenges.

The conference will take place in Modena, Italy, on June 5-6, 2025, at Foro Boario, Department of Economics "Marco Biagi". Social activities will be organized on June 7. More information about the city of Modena is available at: https://www.visitmodena.it/en.

Submissions

We welcome submissions on a range of topics, including, but not limited, to:

• Trends and determinants of economic inequality
• Trends and determinants of social mobility
• Inequality of opportunity and its relationship with educational attainments
• Intergenerational mobility and the role of education
• The measurement of returns to education across both monetary and non-monetary dimensions
• Disparities in educational access, quality, and outcomes
• The role of technology in shaping educational inequality
• Labor market and inequality effects of educational disparities
• Evaluation of policy interventions related to inequality, social mobility and education
• The intersection of inequality, education, and environmental sustainability

We encourage contributions from established researchers as well as early-career scholars and PhD students. Authors are invited to submit an extended abstract (minimum 500 words) to intedu@unimore.it.

There is no participation fee; travel and accommodation expenses are the responsibility of the participants.

Young Researcher Award 2025

The best contribution by young scholars will be awarded a prize. A key evaluation criterion will be the paper's relevance to policy evaluation issues. The selection will be carried out by a scientific committee chaired by Prof. Graziella Bertocchi (UNIMORE and EIEF).
